Commissioned by the Amsterdam Foundation of the Arts, this work was created by artist Reinoud Oudshoorn, who was Alexander’s favourite teacher at the Royal Art Academy in The Hague back in the days. Designed in 2002, these Sculptural Numbers were made especially for the residential neighbourhood “Olympian Quarter” in Amsterdam in 2008, with 900 new homes designed by Rudi Uytenhaak, Lafour & Wijk, and Mulleners & Mulleners architecture studios.
Cast in solid aluminium of the highest quality and with an irresistible shapeliness, Reinoud Oudshoorn’s main principle was that “each resident would have a sculpture of their own”. The numbers, strongly inspired by the architectural movement known as Amsterdamse School, are intended to evoke a strong sense of expression and beg to be touched. Hung on the facade of a building, they shine like huge drops of rain. Inside they will glisten softly as large silver gems.
Reinoud Oudshoorn (1953) is known for applying the illusory language of painting in three-dimensional sculptures. He has received high acclaim for his work, which is collected internationally. His Sculptural Numbers are ca. 17 cm in height and can resist any weather: 200-year life span guaranteed.
