A rare table by Willem Penaat (1875-1957).

Penaat devoted himself to the development of new furniture and interior art. Just like architects and designers such as Hendrik Petrus Berlage, Jac. van den Bosch and Karel de Bazel, Penaat designed simple furniture with a clean construction. The development of his furniture shows a meticulous pursuit of an optimal end result, whereby the wishes of the users, simple manufacture and a contemporary shape were the most important criteria. Penaat’s furniture and interiors are more sober than those of like-minded colleagues. In 1924 Penaat succeeded Paul Bromberg as head of the Modern Interior department for the company Metz & Co in Amsterdam. Penaat’s first furniture designs were simple chairs and cabinets with occasional decoration in exotic wood. Metz&Co had a tradition of presenting modern furniture by leading designers, such as Gerrit Rietveld, who extended the showroom with a glass dome for his own furniture in 1932.
