The straight-forward and multifunctional design of Wim Rietveld, together with André Cordemeyer, for Gispen’s table 530 is the perfect example for ideals in furniture design during the fifties. The steal legs are unbreakably strong and sustainable, elegantly latched in their slim, triangular enforcements. From 1959 onward, the tables—now called 3705— have legs that are adjustable to various sizes. That way, the table can be used as a desk, a dining room table or, at its lowest height, as a sizeable coffee table. Note that the triangular enforcements clasp aróúnd the legs and are not merely welded against them, emphasising a logical equilibrium of outward pressure and countering grip. The original 530 models have a varnished wooden frame and are slight smaller. The 3705 models have a resin frame and metal tops. Both models are covered with linofelt, typical for that time and pleasantly smooth instead of slippery.
