Reminiscent of an insect’s curved and slender legs, the coffee table 535 designed by Wim Rietveld for Gispen is lovingly called the Mosquito. A beautiful design where form follows function, glowing of modernist principles.

The metal tray is snugly fitted into the crossing of the legs, which bend sharply upwards before they flow down in perfect balance. The glass surface rests lightly on the highest point of their curvature. The sheer simplicity of the Mosquito make it a true minimalist treasure that stands out by the use of an uneven amount of legs, and the unexpected geometry thanks to its circular top.

The small pit at the edge of the glass reveals where the plate was hung to cool during production. The top shows some scratching by usage, but is still crystal clear.
