In the 50s designers in the Netherlands were trying to design a sofa that could also be used as a bed. There was housing scarcity and people had little room in their homes due to WWII. Several designers accomplished the task but one stood out and still does: the BR02 by Martin Visser for Spectrum. It is still in production and still a succes.
What we present here is its predecessor, the ‘Sluis’ model, very few were produced as it was still considered a prototype. Its use was tested on the public and adjustments were made. About 5 of these variations are known to have been made before it became the final version we all know now.
Here the back rest flips backwards to create more space for laying down, whereas on the final version the seat is tilted forward with a cantilever system to create a bed.
A very rare piece that holds a key position in the evolution of Dutch design in the reconstruction period.
