Large gestural abstract expressionist painting by Hans Verweij (1928 – 2011).  The work has intriguing, expressive brushstrokes in thick paint, bursting with colour.
Verweij, like artists such as Willem De Kooning, breaks away from the classical perspective, dissolving the central focus. The result is an overall composition of radical movement and colour.
The work is signed by the artist in the bottom corner and labelled verso.

Artist Biography
Born on August 15,1928 in Rotterdam, NL,  Verweij attended the Academy of Visual Arts in Rotterdam, now the Willem de Kooning Academy. He worked as an artist in Rotterdam from 1958 until his death in 2011. In the early days of his career, he created abstract works composed of geometric elements, partly under the influence of Paul Klee. In the sixties Verweij worked on architectural pieces, creating glass-in-concrete windows for churches. From 1967 he developed a more abstract expressionist style.  In the autobiographical novel “De Hef”, Cornelis Bastiaan Vaandrager described Verweij as “ the intelligent painter.” In 1978 Verweij was awarded the Hendrik Chabot Prize and in 1985 with the Great Autumn Salon Prize. Verweij died at the age of 82 in Rotterdam in 2011.
