The Diamond Chair is an iconic design piece from the 20th century. Designed in 1952 by American sculptor Harry Bertoia (1915 -1978) the chair is a study in space, form and function. Like |Eero Saarinen and Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, Bertoia found grace in an industrial material, elevating it beyond its normal utility, into a work of art. The sculptural shape of the chair, creates an object without visually blocking the space surrounding it. The use of metal and metal mesh, is a direct link to Bertoia’s work as a sculptor. Originally the chair was produced by Knoll International and is still in production. It came in an all black, all white or mixed version and was intended to be used both in- and outdoor. Next to the Diamond chair, Bertoia created a Large Diamond chair, a side chair and the even more sculptural Bird chair.
