A lovable easy chair and striking example of early industrial design: Wim Rietveld and André Cordemeyer’s lounge chair no. 415 for Gispen. Together with its slightly larger twin 1401, it was included in the series ‘furniture for an elementary interior’, that was introduced in the Netherlands during the fifties.

The straight back and slim, rounded steel legs indeed give the chair its taut, light character so suitable for modern interiors. Not a chair to cuddle up in, but definitely one that serves one’s back for a comfortable seating and a good read.

The frame is lacquered graphite black, the modest armrests are made of bakelite. This specimen has been left in vintage condition, but can be lacquered anew if desired.

The cushions are cut from high quality foam and have been upholstered in original manner — not too thick, smooth and tight — with a fine wool in a colour strongly reminiscent of popular colours in the fifties. The rear of the backrest is left bare, underscoring the sober, functional appearance of this Gispen classic.

On the 10th Triennial in Milan this chair was awarded a golden medal.
